New Health Centre Impresses Dundee Folk

Angus HotelIt is now seven weeks since the custom-built Wallacetown Health Centre in Dundee opened its doors to patients.

Built and equipped at a total cost of £725,000, the centre sited between Lyon Street and Victoria Street, is Dundee's newest and the biggest of its type in Tayside.

The set-up has its critics. Some feat that the sheer size of the building may destroy doctor-patient relationships, and others feel that centralising medical facilities in such a building will mean lengthy travelling for patients.

The Wallacetown Centre has 17 doctors catering for about 50,000 patients - about a quarter of the population of Dundee.

There are no plans to extend Riverside Drive say Roads Department
There is virtually no possibility of a new road extending across reclaimed land from Riverside Drive to Perth Road at the Ninewells roundabout.

A spokesman for Tayside Region Roads Department said yesterday, "There are no plans to extend Riverside Drive beyond the existing bend at Vernonholme corner".

Dundee Volunteer Bureau Threat

Since it first came into formation just over eight years ago, Dundee Volunteer Bureau has built itself up from an experimental project into a successful organisation.

At their Headquarters at Grey Lodge Settlement, they have a "job shop" offering 100 types of jobs, calling for up to 700 volunteer workers. Over 150 workers are now on their cards, 130 of whom have been recruited in the last three months, with more people joining them every day.

However, unless they get strong support, all the hard work put in over the months to make the bureau a validly-functioning social service may come to an end in a few months, when current financial support is completely withdrawn.
