Dundee’s V.I.P. Weaver

A Dundee weaver will be feted when she visits the 33,000 ton liner Transvaal Castle next week. She is 53 year old Miss Elizabeth Watt, Kirkton.

The gesture is the Union Castle Line’s way of saying “thanks” to all who helped towards putting the luxury liner on her travels.Miss Watt has been a weaver for 36 years at Donald Bros., Ltd., Old Glamis factory, where the liner’s coverings for furnishings, curtains and bedspreads were made.

In making the invitation the company insisted that it should be given to someone on the factory “bench”. Miss Watt, with other employees in the factory, put her name on the invitation list. Hers was the lucky one out of the hat.

So she travels to Glasgow where she will meet employees from other firms. They go onto Southampton, where the Transvaal Castle is lying. The trip will be Miss Watt’s first visit to England since before the war. Miss Watt will be shown around the ship, eat in its restaurants, and spend a night in one of the cabins.

The ship makes its maiden voyage to South Africa later this month. Said Miss Watt, “I wouldn’t mind stowing away, I have a brother in South Africa I haven’t seen for many years!

Bright Tips

When Cooking Chips – Put a small piece of onion a pinch of salt and shake of pepper into the fat. The chips have a nice oniony flavour and are already seasoned. Mrs J. Mustard, Cullen.

To Keep Food Hot – Instead of putting food in the oven to keep it hot for latecomers, cover it closely with a tin or plate and place over a saucepan of hot water. This keeps the food hot and prevents it from drying out. Mrs Slater, Portknockie.

Flowers – On Ice…

Dundee Flower Show lost money last year. And one of the reasons was the price of hiring the Caird Hall. The hall fee was £260.

The horticultural society has made efforts to have the levy reduced. It pleaded that the Caird Hall can be let for free for educational purposes, that the handsome two-day display of flower and fruit has distinct educational significance.

But the show is also a shop window for commercial firms connected with gardening. The support of these firms is essential. And some of their displays are among the outstanding features of the show. So the commercial tie-up makes it impossible for the corporation to classify the event as entirely educational.

So this year’s show will be in a new setting. And the likely venue will be the Dundee-Angus Ice Rink in Kingsway. Instead of £260, the ice rink fee for a two-day show will be only £60.

Snow Clearance: Lord Provost Replies:

Lord Provost Maurice McManus this week answered the critics who said that snow clearance should come before the fairy lights.

He suggested there was no real connection between the city centre’s £1300 worth of decorations and the battle of the recent snowstorm.

“Even assuming that there was” he added “surely when the weather gets rough there is all the more need for raising public moral”

Following a post-mortem on the storm involving heads of Cleansing, Transport, Parks and Direct Labour Departments important moves were made for the future. Two more gritters are to be added to the four new sand spraying vehicles.

Constables on the beat will report treacherous spots and their information will be flashed to the snow-clearing H.Q.

Cleansing chief Mr James D. Henry, will continue as commandant of the storm troops. But because of delays in mustering a force of shovellers, his department will no longer be responsible for the call-out of all men involved. Snow clearers not on Cleansing Department books will be fetched by their own departments. All heads of departments have promised to aim at 100 per cent co-operation.

Official reaction does not agree with critics that the handling of the last storm was inefficient. Although the sudden fall came when snow-clearance men were more difficult to get because of the holiday, disruption of public transport schedules was not serious.

Snow precaution tip by the Lord Provost: - “So far as the pavements are concerned, I think it would help a lot if those who have premises on main streets stocked up with salt generously outside their shops and offices as soon as the snow starts to fall”.

Cold Reception

It was a cold, bleak Hogmanay for some parts of Fintry. The electricity went off at about 7 p.m. and didn’t come back on until over three hours later.

People who had gone “all-electric” were hard put to it to keep warm, and there was little of the festive touch.
