Treat For Jazz Fans

Central Library 1954There's a treat in store for jazz fans at the Caird Hall on Wednesday. One of the worlds greatest trumpeters Freddy Randall is appearing with his band. Jim Brown and his band are supporting him.Freddy and his band have made many records, probably the best known being "At The Jazz Band Ball"

George Grant Plays for United

George Grant, the Dundee lad who bought his transfer form Arbroath, will play for United reserves at left-half today at Stirling against Albion Reserves.

George is a product of Harp and gave several season's good service to Arbroath.There is a good chance for Grant to make the 1st team now the Eddie Stewart has been called to the forces. George, a son of the well-known boxing promoter and is manager to boxer Jimmy Croll.

They Wanted Lady Docker To Play Marbles In City Square

Dundee students hoped to stage a world-title contest in the City Square on this year's Charities Day, April 28.
The title was to be that of World Women's Marbles Champion and the students wrote asking Lady Docker to compete in City Square against their Charities Queen.

However Lady Docker had to decline as she will be abroad at the time.

The students have also written to Lord Nuffield asking him to donate a car as a prize for one of their competitions.

Holiday For Local Lads

In the Easter Holidays 24 pupils of Stobswell Boys School will spend a fortnight in Holland at the homes of Dutch schoolboys.

An application from the Stobswell Headmaster for travelling grants for his pupils was heard by Dundee Educational Trust on Thursday. This was the first such application from a junior secondary school. The trust approved a grant of £4 each subject to individual consideration. The Dutch boys will pay a return visit in July.

The One-Man Bus

Experiments with the one-man operated bus, which were temporarily suspended last April are to be continued.

At Dundee Town Council the Transport Convener, Mr Harry Dickson, said they might decide to buy at least 20 of these buses in place of the double-deckers when the question of replacements arose.

An amendment by Mr Bailie Peter C. Robertson that the existing one-man bus be brought into revenue-earning commission at once was defeated by a large majority.
