Dundee's Own Davy Crockett

An American couple were staying with relatives in Dundee last summer when the young lad from next door walked in.
"What's your name son?" they asked
"Davy Crockett" said the sturdy seven year old.
"Now then" they said with a smile
"What's your real name?"
"That is my real name" he protested
Davy couldn't understand then why the couple were so amused because the Davy Crockett craze hadn't yet reached this country.

But the Americans of course, knew all about the legendary Davy, famed frontiersman from Tennessee, for their children were playing at home in coonskin caps.

When they returned home they sent the Charleston Drive boy a jersey with the real Davy Crockett embroidered on it.

Davy is know as "King of the Wild Frontier" among his classmates.

Did You Know..

How many readers know about the very special rivet on the Forth Bridge? Every few days a railway worker goes along the bridge at the southern end until he comes to a certain stud on the east parapet and polishes it.  It was the last stud to be put in the bridge. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) hammered it in on March  4 1890, when he opened the bridge. The stud that glitters is of gilded soft metal and was riveted cold.

Overgate Plan Gets The Ok

Dundee Town Council on Thursday night approved the recent decision of the Planning Committee to widen the Overgate and construct an access.

The Overgate is to be widened on the south side to 74 feet overall between Tally Street and Reform Street and the access will form a right-angled intersection with the High Street opposite Crichton Street .

There will be a crescent-shaped pavement from Boots' corner to where the new street will join the High Street.
