Beatles at the Caird Hall

The eagerly-awaited appearance of The Beatles in Dundee has been set for early October.

The Caird Hall will house this certain crowd puller, certainly the city’s biggest “pop” promotion for quite some time.

The supporting bill for the show stars an exciting array of top entertainers – the Caravelles, the singing duo who at present occupy a hit parade berth, Houston Wells and the Marksmen, the Crestas, and local men the Teenbeats.

In addition to their Dundee date, the Beatles will also appear in Glasgow and Kirkcaldy.

Disturbance at Carnival

“I think everybody in the city knows this is becoming a too common occurrence, especially when the carnival is on” said Police Judge John Stewart at the Police Court on Thursday.

Four youths, aged 15 to 17, were each fined £1 when the admitted a breach of the peace at Gussie Park on Wednesday night.

The four youths and two others were fighting with each other.

Sunday TV too Popular

Dundee Film Society are to suspend their activities during the coming winter because of declining membership. The decision was reached at the society’s annual meeting this week, when it was learned that membership stood at just under 200.

The hon. Secretary, Dr B. L. Andrew, said that in the society’s hey-day in the early 50s membership had stood at a thousand.

He bland the high standard of television programmes on Sunday evenings, when the society met, for the fall-off of interest.

The society’s office bearers were re-elected and the position will be reviewed again next year.

There are two other film societies in the city, the Broughty Ferry society and a group at Queen’s College.

Week-end bus fares as from today will cost a penny more. Concession fares for the elderly are not effected.

The increase has been imposed to try to wipe out the transport department’s estimated deficit of £50,000.

The children’s fare for up to two stages stays at twopence.

Both Senior Clubs Can do Well

It’s off again today after a short close season. Both Dundee and United officials are hoping to see the fans turn out in their many thousands. Only that way can they hope to be successful.

I’m certain that we are in for a good year at both Dens and Tannadice Parks.

The talent is there, and both Bob Shankly and Jerry Kerr have put in a power of work unearthing young players of good promise.

The result of that work was shown in the trial games. Both were fortunate to discover young wingers who look like making their mark in the games.

The reserve strength is certainly greatly improved and good reserves are needed to keep up a challenge for honours.

And we certainly want to see both Dundee and United take on the best and give them a licking.

The clubs set out in their League Cup sections today, and I don’t see anything to stop them from qualifying for the knock-out section.

United set the home season arolling with a visit from Aberdeen,

Jerry Kerr’s lads have been a bogy to the dons since their return to the First Division but Aberdeen are an improved lot, and they’ll fight all the way.

But United are strong fore and aft, and it will take a mighty good team to down them, especially at Tannadice Park.

I’m certainly looking forward to a corker of a game, and I’m taking United to get the points.

With Jimmy Briggs out with injury, the United team picked itself. It is:-
Davie; Millar; Gordon’ Neilson; Smith; Fraser; Carlyle; Gillespie; Rooney; Irvine; Mitchell.

Bob Shankly takes his team to his old stamping ground – Cathkin Park.

There the Dark Blues will meet a reconstructed Third Lanark team.

I question if Thirds will hit it at the beginning of the season, and I look to Dundee to bring home two valuable points.

Dundee are unfortunate to start off with an injury list. Bobby Cox, Craig Brown and Alan Cousin have been under the trainer all week.

Cousin is fit for today. Cox is likely to be ready by Wednesday. The team for Cathkin is:- Slater; Hamilton; Stuart; Seith; Ryden; Brown or Houston; Smith; Penman; Cousin; Gilzean; Robertson.

On Wednesday Dundee are at home to Airdrie, while United travel to Easter Road to meet Hibs.

Good luck to both clubs in their bid for honour.

Reader’s Bright Tips

Warm It – When emery paper becomes limp, place it in a warm oven for a few minutes. It will become stiff and easy to handle again. Miss A. Mitchell, Campbelltown.

No Peg Marks – To prevent peg marks while hanging out washed collar, sew buttons along an old collar, peg it to the line and button washed collars to it. Mrs J. Rice, Rutherglen.
