Runaway Bullock in Dundee Street

OvergateMuch excitement was caused in the central parts of the city on Monday by the peregrination of a bullock, belonging to a city butcher which had escaped from the slaughter house in East Dock Street. It was about 6 o'clock when the animal broke loose, and the difficulty experienced in securing it will be to some extent realised when it is stated that not until about two hours afterwards was it brought to bay, and that at a point so far remote from the slaughter house as the meadows in Constitution Road. Hither and thither the infuriated beast careered through the principle thoroughfares in the centre of the city, causing much alarm to foot passengers, and no small amusement to adventure loving youths who followed its progress with interested and unconcealed delight. Notwithstanding the excitement under which the animal necessarily laboured in thus finding itself at large, it does not appear to be the cause of any damage, apart from breaking down four foot of paling on the north side of the meadows. On being secured it was removed to the slaugher-house.

Mr Reid, professional rat catcher writes from Blair Castle, n.b. a few hours after using Rodine rat poison I found 275 rats. I have been a rat catcher for 45 years and never saw anything so deadly. Rats like it, eat it, and die.

A Thrifty Housewife

If the fine striped linen covering of your old mattress, "thrift" is rather worn I am afraid it would be bad policy to attempt to utilise it for pillow and bolster slips as the feathers would be constantly finding their way out. Would it not be better to buy new ticking, and then use the linen as inner covers to protect ticking and feathers alike from dust? If this plan does not commend itself, you might make cushions for bedroom or kitchen chairs of the material.

A Dull Wednesday

Dundee holiday-makers were not very fortunate in the weather on Wednesday. Indeed their experience so far has not been encouraging. When not absoultely raining there has always been a suspicion of a down pour, which has interfeared with the freedom of outdoor life that is naturally expected when on holiday. On Wednesday Dundee was more on holiday that it had been all week. It was shopkeepers day and the little business that was doing since Saturday was almost brought to a standstill. The bulk of the shops and all public houses were closed, so that the city assumed the aspect of a Sunday during church time. The only signs that it was a week day were the tramways which plied half empty all day.

A Hopeless Kind of Creature

A youth named Arthur Ballinger, describing himself as a mill worker, appeared before Sheriff Campbell Smith at Dundee on Tuesday charged with stealing a shirt from a lodging house in St Clement's Lane. It was stated that the shirt belonged to a fellow lodger. Ballinger explained he did not know the shirt belonged to any one, and as he did not have one he just took it for himself. The Sheriff said there were six previous convictions against Ballinger and he was a hopeless kind of creature. Sentence of twenty days imprisonment was passed.

Cycle Route

The prettiest route to cycle from Dundee to Grandtully is certainly by Blairgowrie, though the road to Blairgowrie is more difficult than that to Perth. After reaching Blairgowrie, strike off to Dunkeld along the road bordering many beautiful lochs; then onto Ballinluig. Five miles from Ballinluig on the Aberfeldy road and you will have reached Grandtully and the fine Strathtay. If desired, the route by Perth could be taken on the road home but the journey is slightly longer.

A Fatal Camping Out

Dundee public will learn with regret of the tragic death of one who was well known in Dundee football circles. George Nicoll, the centre half of the Dundee Junior Team, went along with several companions to have a holiday in the vicinity of Callander, they had been camping out and on Wednesday Nicoll did not feel well at all and was removed to a hotel in Callander, where he died on Thursday. Nicoll played several games for Dundee reserves towards the end of last season. He was about 24 years old.
