Trial of White the Barber

Mr Al Agnew, Procurator-Fiscal of Dundee has received information from the Crown authorities that the High Court will hold a sitting in Dundee on 4th May next  for the purpose of hearing evidence against Charles White, who is in custody on the charge of murdering Peter Cooney. White will appear at a pleading diet of court on 24th April.

Charles White, the barber it is learned has greatly improved in health since the day of his apprehension. He eats and sleeps well and has recovered his nerve, which as a fugitive at the hands of justice he had lost. Further with regular food and sleep following his hardship of many weeks of a nomadic life he has gained in weight. Into his mental state investigations have been made by experts on behalf of the defence and also for the Crown.

Mr Churchill and Dundee

We understand on very good authority that Mr Winston Churchill will now be asked to stand as a Liberal candidate for Dundee. The Liberal executive are now in communication with him, and there is every reason to believe that he will contest to fight the seat. His candidature will be popular with the rank and file of Dundee and he is assured of a most cordial welcome from the Liberals of Dundee.

Dundee Volunteer Camp

The General Commanding Scotland has approved of a proposal for the Dundee Regiment to camp for the last fortnight in July at Balshandie, a large farm on the Coupar Angus Road, held by Mr David Ritchie who has kindly given permission. The camp will last for a fortnight and men are allowed to join for one week or the whole period. From the past experience of the two camps on this site in 1891 and 1897 it is expected that this fixture will have a good effect on enlisting and recruiting. This is proceeding steadily the present strength being about 420. Many men are still considering and it is hoped a camp at Balshandie may settle these waverers.
