Drunk with Impunity

Law HillThe Chief Constable of Forfarshire wishes to impress upon the people of Dundee that they cannot now go out to the country and get drunk with impunity, the law applicable to such offences in the city being also applicable in the country. He made a remark to this effect at a Justice of Peace court held in Dundee on Monday in connection with the prosecution of a hackney carriage driver named John Gibb Anderson, living in Hillbank Road, for having been drunk while in charge of a horse and carriage on the public road leading between Dundee and Alyth. Mr Birnie pointed out that the authorities had been saddled with the expense of keeping the accused and his horse until they were sent for from Dundee; and he has moved for a penalty sufficient to cover the costs. Anderson expressed regret stated that he had been in custody since Saturday and promised to become an abstainer. The court imposed a fine of 20s or 7 days imprisonment.
